Independent Research Project... Topic

My group is planning to choose topics under the umbrella of old to new.. the idea of Rome as a city that is creating and becoming something new out of so much 'old'. For my contribution to the project, I want to look into architecture and renovation. I'm still quite vague on which angle I want to take and what exactly I want to focus on. This is a very broad topic. I am interested in learning more about the efforts that have been made to construct new buildings in the city, and the controversies surrounding those efforts.
